Workforce gives back to the community

As the overall unemployment rate continues to rise, many communities such as Marion County in Florida are coming up with ways to help dislocated individuals. The programs Workforce Connection and CFCC’s Continuing Education and Corporate Training Program, help unemployed individuals with new job training, discussions of job options, help with resumes, and financial budget management for individuals with jobs and individuals going through the transitional phase between jobs.

Training programs help employees succeedWhile this may not solve a continuously declining economic outlook and a continuous rise in unemployment due to the decline in the overall economy, it is nevertheless a great way to keep a specific community afloat. By training recently laid off workers in new job fields and teaching them how to budget and how to stick to their budget, Workforce Connections and CFCC are helping to keep the Marion community’s unemployment levels from rising and their citizens from going into the bad cycle of debt. In the example of a woman who sought help through Workforce, she landed a new job within a week of being laid off from her old one.

These training and tips programs are very flexible in terms of time, location, and the willingness from these companies to give back to the community, “If an employer is planning a layoff, big or small, we'll be happy to come in and do a workshop with them, even if it's a handful of people…” Simultaneously, “a state grant of $200,000, as well as a pending national emergency grant for nearly $1 million can help pay salaries while a person is training on the job and can help with classes at CFCC. There also are funds for transportation to interviews, relocation out of the area, and special items, such as scrubs for health care workers”.

In essence, while this is not the permanent solution for our current economic slump, nor will this suffice in keeping workers employed and out of debt if so said economic decline continues indefinitely, for now, this is a great program that is keeping people alive, with hope, and employed.
